API vs Subscription: How to Choose the Right AI Pricing Model

Use the API if you send fewer than about 3.5M tokens a month on GPT-5.4 or 5M on Claude Sonnet 5 — below that, pay-per-token costs less than a $20/month ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro subscription. Above it, or if you never want to think about usage, the subscription wins. On a budget model such as GPT-5.4 mini the API stays cheaper until roughly 12M tokens a month, which almost no individual reaches in chat.

Subscriptions offer simplicity: flat monthly fee, chat interface, no usage tracking. APIs offer flexibility: programmatic access, model selection and cost control.

The right choice depends on three factors: how you use AI (interactive versus automated), how much you use it (light versus heavy), and what you are building (a chat habit versus a product).
